Pray a Psalm
Options: Psalm 63 (God’s Presence), Psalm 51 (Confession), Psalm 139 (God Knows Us), Psalms 42-43 (Desiring God in Hardship), Psalm 91 (God’s Protection), Psalm 145 (Praising God)
- Read through the whole Psalm once.
- Read it again using your imagination to visualize what is said in the Psalm (i.e. if you read, “How lovely is your dwelling place, Oh LORD Almighty” [Ps. 84:1] you might imagine walking into the ancient temple in Jerusalem, etc.).
- Imagine you are the original author and read again it as though you were him. Picture his surroundings and how he might have felt about the phases in the Psalm.
- Note words or whole phrases that caught your attention and re-read them, asking this question in prayer: “Lord, how do these Words of Yours speak to me?”
- Pick one verse or phrase that sticks out to you the most and repeat it four or five times as a prayer, emphasizing different words.
- Read through the whole Psalm again as if it where your own prayer, perhaps even replacing “I, me, my” with your name.
- Write your own prayer version of a portion of the Psalm that spoke to you.
