Pray a Psalm

Options: Psalm 63 (God’s Presence), Psalm 51 (Confession), Psalm 139 (God Knows Us), Psalms 42-43 (Desiring God in Hardship), Psalm 91 (God’s Protection), Psalm 145 (Praising God)

  1. Read through the whole Psalm once.
  2. Read it again using your imagination to visualize what is said in the Psalm (i.e. if you read, “How lovely is your dwelling place, Oh LORD Almighty” [Ps. 84:1] you might imagine walking into the ancient temple in Jerusalem, etc.).
  3. Imagine you are the original author and read again it as though you were him. Picture his surroundings and how he might have felt about the phases in the Psalm.
  4. Note words or whole phrases that caught your attention and re-read them, asking this question in prayer: “Lord, how do these Words of Yours speak to me?”
  5. Pick one verse or phrase that sticks out to you the most and repeat it four or five times as a prayer, emphasizing different words.
  6. Read through the whole Psalm again as if it where your own prayer, perhaps even replacing “I, me, my” with your name.
  7. Write your own prayer version of a portion of the Psalm that spoke to you.
